Sara Maitland had written a book on silence, based on her experiences in a variety of isolated locations. This picture pretty much got where I wanted to go with the shoot – wild, romantic landscape, theatrically lit. Keeping my lighting kit under control was a major hassle. It was shot last October for the Guardian Magazine, and was used some weeks later in the Observer.
