The 45 year-old Scot ,who was abducted on 12 March by the Army of Islam, looked happy but frail at a press conference to announce his release.

Johnston said he said he had been unable to see the sun for three of the four months of his imprisonment, but that he had only been physically harmed by his captors in the our before his release.

“The last 16 weeks have been the very worst of my life,” he said. “I was in the hands of people who were dangerous and unpredictable.”
