Seasonal Punch

6 December 2005 - EPUK

Perhaps with an eye to more lucrative paparazzo work, it seems freelance photographer Steve Farrell, 30, of Liverpool, may be trying to convince certain fist-eager celebrities that it’s OK to punch photographers after all.

Farrell claims that booze challenged former England footballer Paul Gasgoigne assaulted him on Monday night after Gazza attended a fundraiser for a drug and alcohol charity – ironically on the same day he was sacked from his job as manager of Kettering Town FC for, according to Kettering’s chairman Imraan Ladak, alcohol-related incidents.

According to Ladak, Gazza notched up 37 alcohol-related incidents during his 39 days at the club; presumably it took two days for him to catch up with the new licensing laws.

Talking to reporters after the incident, Farrell says that when he asked permission to take a picture, Gazza promptly punched him. At this point, says Farrell “his mates pulled him off”. Unfortunately the mental image of Paul Gasgoigne being pulled off by his mates prevents this reporter from wishing to investigate the incident further.

Gasgoigne was arrested within 30 minutes of the incident and released the next day on Police bail.

Despite needing paramedic treatment to a cut eye, Farrell said he decided not to press charges because, “Paul Gasgoigne has enough problems to cope with in his life at the moment”.

It warms the cockles, doesn’t it?
