A bombed building in the Southern city of Sderot Israel – Tal Cohen, 2008

27 February 2009

This picture was taken last year during a day of Israeli army operation in Gaza, when rockets from Gaza landed all over the Southern cities in Israel.

I worked all day near the Gaza border with Israel ‘chasing’ after the rockets. Late at night a ‘Grad’ Rocket landed on a building and I shot this picture, it is one of the last pictures that I have from Israel.

I won a prize at the annual 2008 Israel-Palestine photography competition for this picture and others that formed a news series from that day.

Tal Cohen’s love of photography started as a child and at the age of 14 his first published picture appeared in a local newspaper. At the age of 15, he joined a daily national newspaper in Israel.

Over the following years, Tal worked as a staff photographer for the most widely published Israeli newspaper ‘Yedioth Aharonoth’. From 2001 until 2005 he covered the second ‘Intifadah’ in Israel and the West Bank along with news and sports all over Israel for the French Press Agency; AFP, working as their photographer in Tel Aviv. His pictures were published in newspapers and magazines worldwide, including Time Magazine, Newsweek, Stern, Der Spiegel, Le Point, and many more.

He is a freelance press photographer currently based in London.

Photographer since 1992, EPUK member since 2009.

What is EPUK?

EPUK is an email group for professional editorial photographers who want to talk business. We don’t do techie stuff or in-crowd gossip. We don’t talk cameras or computers. What we talk about are the nuts and bolts of being in business - like copyright, licensing, fees and insurance.
