Luke, guitarist of Cardiff metal band Shaped by Fate, playing at Clwb Ifor Bach. The gig was a farewell to drummer Owen who was playing his last show.
This shot was primarily for my portfolio and was taken with standard slow synch flash. Dingy, sweaty clubs don’t offer perfect lighting or press areas so it was taken from the crowd. This is a great time to use a prime lens so you can keep your other arm free to hold back crowd surfers and fans!
About three years ago, during my final year at university, I began supplying photographs to my university paper; this led to a couple of commissions from music magazines. After graduating in 2005 I took on a number of part time jobs to subsidise my photography income, but over the last eight to nine months I’ve managed to drum up enough business to work full time as a freelance photographer.
Much of my current work comes from the music industry for magazines such as Future Music and NME. Through South West News Service I regularly send images to the national press, covering events like Glastonbury and Download festivals. I also do PR shoots and some commercial work for small businesses too.
Photographer since 2006, EPUK member since 2007.
