Toni & Guy 2009 collection – Amanda Thomas, 2008

13 November 2008

This is from a recent shoot I did with the hairdressers Toni & Guy. It is part of a series of five images for their new hair collection and was taken in my studio, which is in a converted church in central Bristol.

Shooting hair is quite tricky, as it doesn’t always do what you want it to. We would begin the shoot and after taking five frames would have to stop for the hair stylist to spray the modal’s hair or make adjustments with a comb. Then the clothes would need to have a small adjustment because of all the movement. And so it goes on. The whole process is ‘test and measure’ with frequent pauses to make all important alterations. Patience and a keen eye are essential to work with a team of stylists, models and make-up artists and keeping the client happy too.

Amanda Thomas began her career working as a professional photographer in 1998 and later this month will be celebrating ten years in the business. She regularly shoots for music magazines such as Guitarist and Total Guitar, which has taken her behind the scenes back stage where she feels she has met some of the worlds most interesting people, such as Brian May, Justin Hawkins and Slash to name a few. The majority of her work is music, fashion, hair and interiors.

Photographer since 1998, EPUK member since 2008.

What is EPUK?

EPUK is an email group for professional editorial photographers who want to talk business. We don’t do techie stuff or in-crowd gossip. We don’t talk cameras or computers. What we talk about are the nuts and bolts of being in business - like copyright, licensing, fees and insurance.
