'Set up' cameraman fined

A US cameraman has been fined for endangering the lives of children in a bid to dramatise his news footage.

Gary Abrahamsen of WES-TV in Ohio offered to put three teenagers on the news if they rode their push-bikes through ‘waist high raging floodwaters’, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

The court heard the set up was produced to support a broadcast by a journalist who was reporting on unusual weather conditions which had claimed the lives of two people.

But when a passing police officer saw the event Abrahamsen was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Abrahamsen denied coaxing the two 13-year-olds and one 14-year-old to ride through the water, but said that paying the fine was cheaper than fighting the charge.
