EPUK Editorial Photographers United Kingdom and Ireland. The private mailing list and public resource for editorial photographers

Dear Jon...

31 August 2001 - EPUK

BJP editor Jon Tarrant wrote of the Red Bull rights grab fiasco: “As for forums ‘expressing disappointment with the BJP’, such concerns should be addressed to the magazine – assuming that the people concerned have the balls.”. We’ve got the balls, Jon. Bring it on.

FOR PUBLICATION

We see that in this week’s Press Gazette story concerning the Red Bull promotion that you accuse us of being “scared” and that we have denied you access to our web site.

Both these allegations are completely false.
The Red Bull Photofiles competition has been subject to considerable private and public criticism from professional photographers “elsewhere” as you have put it, but strangely enough not in the BJP.

You appear to believe that we have unfairly prevented you from defending the BJP’s position, while also claiming to have put all sides of the story to your readers. This despite the fact that you have not actually published any feedback received from photographers. Perhaps it has been too negative?

To prove that we are neither scared nor deny you access we are happy to offer you the opportunity of putting your case on the EPUK web site for our readers to see. In return we will provide you with an article for publication in the BJP presenting the professional photographers’ case against the Red Bull contest and the BJP’s promotion of it.

We propose that both articles be published unedited, and that they run without comment and are of equal length.

Shall we say a thousand words at dawn?

Please don’t disappoint us.

What is EPUK?

EPUK is an email group for professional editorial photographers who want to talk business. We don’t do techie stuff or in-crowd gossip. We don’t talk cameras or computers. What we talk about are the nuts and bolts of being in business - like copyright, licensing, fees and insurance.
