The unanimous decision on Friday by the union’s National Executive Council approves the setting up of the first dedicated photographers branch in the 102-year history of the journalists’ body.
The move came after an test meeting in July, organised by union members based in London, drew an enthusiastic response from photographers.
The union has traditionally organised at grassroots level either with members belonging to a geographical branch, or a workplace chapel, either of which usually contain journalists of all disciplines. While some NUJ branches do already organise by industrial sector, they are relatively rare.
The first official meeting of the new branch, at which branch officials will be elected, is expected to be in October. Any NUJ members wanting to be a part of the new branch are welcome to attend, vote and stand for positions.

About time NUJ had the dedicated photographers branch. NUJ has been an excellent resource for me over the years!
Thanks, Chris
