Multiple Exposure Flamenco by Leo Mason

1 March 2016

This image is of the Flamenco dancer Manuel Linan performing during the 2015 Flamenco Festival FIRE at London’s Sadlers Wells Theatre.

Whilst known principally as a photographer who shoots sports, I decided in 2010 to expand into dance which I had always been interested in. I have been shooting multiple exposures since 2008 and this image was shot using the basic technique together with custom synchronisations to illustrate the motion and precision of the dancer’s cape in the scene.

The combination of artistic dance and movement lends itself well for this particular technique, however I use it sparingly and only if the piece that I am shooting warrants it.

Leo Mason has photographed the past 10 Summer Olympic Games from 1976-2012, numerous Winter Olympic Games, FIFA World Cups, Americas Cups and most of the worlds major sporting events. During this time he has worked and contributed to TIME Magazine, Sports Illustrated, LIFE Magazine, NEWSWEEK, USA TODAY, GQ Magazine, Paris-Match, STERN and many others. He is an ex-council member of the Chelsea Arts Club and was Chair of the club’s exhibitions sub-committee for two years.

What is EPUK?

EPUK is an email group for professional editorial photographers who want to talk business. We don’t do techie stuff or in-crowd gossip. We don’t talk cameras or computers. What we talk about are the nuts and bolts of being in business - like copyright, licensing, fees and insurance.
