This picture was taken on 3rd June 2002 at the Party at the Palace, held to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
Pop Idol winner Will Young joined former Queen member Brian
May on stage at the pop concert at Buckingham Palace to perform to an audience of 12,000 members of the public.
My wife won tickets to the concert and it turned out we were sat on the front row! No pro photos were allowed; not a problem, as I hadn’t taken a serious photo in 20 years. I bought a reasonable digicam for the occasion and came back with some good pics.
This image sums the whole event up for me; a joyous occasion and the time when I rediscovered how much I enjoyed taking photos. A Road to Damascus moment.

Gavin Wright came to photography relatively late in his career path, having studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Manchester Polytechnic in 1983.
Gavin worked in the electronics retail and components industry for the next 18 years before being made redundant from his last employer in 2001.
It wasn’t until the Party at the Palace that he decided to join the BIPP, where he gained his Licentiateship in December 2002 and Associateship in April 2003, when he went officially self-employed.
Since then he has been working hard to build up his client base which now includes local press, commercial, corporate and social clients. Ideally he’d like a studio, which he says he may have to build in his garden.
Gavin hopes his success at the BIPP Scottish Print Awards will also help to boost his career.
Photographer since 2003, EPUK member since 2006.
